The Etsy Vision

Apparently my coping mechanism for stress is absent philosophizing. It often descends into excited speculation of all the great things I am capable of achieving. The greatest of endeavors become possible and the constraints of reality become mere suggestions. Some people call them “delusions of grandeur.” I throw it all into a notebook and call it my business plan.

See above. I wasn’t kidding about the notebook. It may just look like drunken ramblings, but this is where the magic happens.

An Etsy shop generating hobby income is hardly a business in most people’s definition of the word, but think of it as one and you’re one step closer to the dream. I like to think big. The trouble is, getting out of the thinking phase and into the doing phase is the hardest part. One quote I read online that strongly resonates with me (and was probably devised by an equally introspective and discombobulated personality) is “Perfectionists are often procrastinators, as they can tend to think “I don’t have the right skills or resources to do this perfectly now, so I won’t do it at all.”

Yep, that’s me.

I can picture myself building a product line, putting together a kick-starter, hiring employees, advertising… the list of ideas goes on, but all I have to guide me is my intuition, which first asks, “Is the time right yet?” and then quickly retorts, “Of course not, fool.”

The idea to start a blog to go with Kangaroocrafts was one of those late-night epiphanies that I had pushed to the back of my mind for the longest time. I wanted to be different from the hundreds of other craft blogs around, and I wanted it to be wonderful from the get-go. So of course, it never happened. One day an incredible surge of inspiration demanded, “Just write something! Anything! Start! Now!” The time was right.

Turns out that surge of inspiration was the result of my procrastinating something else- writing college application essays- but it was a kick to the backside nonetheless, and it got things done.

The question still remains. Where do I want to see my Etsy shop a couple years down the line? Well first off, everything in the business plan is going to happen. One day, for sure. The ultimate dream would be to establish myself as a brand name. It’s tough to convince yourself your dream is possible, but I look for role models everywhere. Take, for example, The Original Knitted Beard Hat. My initial thought when discovering them was,“That’s it??? I could do that.”

Well, yeah, of course I could but the reality is I didn’t. They did. A+ for execution and may Kangaroocrafts be just as triumphant some day.

Why Regretsy.com was a Godsend

You could call Regretsy.com Etsy’s an evil twin, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Often hailed as the “the site that shall not be named” in Etsy forums, the blog specialized in relentlessly tearing apart crafting failures that someone, somewhere, had the nerve to post on the internet and try to sell.

If you had any shred of empathy at all, it was occasionally physically sickening to imagine what the featured artists went through during their “15 minutes” of unwanted fame, but despite misgivings about the site’s virtues, I soon became an avid reader, and let me tell you why.

Regretsy was brutal, bordering on cruel and Etsy forums are filled with shop owners expressing everything from hatred and mortification to awestruck admiration, but the general consensus is that any attention is good attention. That was the first of many lessons to be learned by this site.

Regretsy was my bible when I was starting my shop, and the secondhand embarrassment I got from reading it was probably a better crash course on Business Etiquette 101 than any professional could offer. When you read pages of comments mocking a shop owner for poor spelling and grammar, carelessness, misrepresentation of products and other cheap tricks in general, the only things that cycle through your mind are “I will not be that person. I will not be that person. I will not be that person” with the occasional “What were they thinking?!

Cringe-worthy humor aside, Regretsy prepared me for reality, and after a long time of debating whether I really wanted to go for it, I soon had two strong reasons why I had to. Number one was to prove that my art was of the good twin variety, the kind that people would adore and maybe want to feature on the home page. And number two was that I figured that being featured on Regretsy was basically the worst that could happen, so and I said to myself, “I could probably take that and run with it”. I’ve got a thick skin and a decent sense of humor. I knew what to expect and I was ready.

Luckily, I haven’t been on the receiving end of too much criticism, but I welcome every bit of it. 55 positive reviews sure feel good, but you know what’s even better? The one that makes you realize you’re doing something horribly wrong. One customer of mine, upon viewing the first proof of her custom order, told me straight up that it was hideous. Of course, my mother was up in arms, all “How dare she say something like that to my baby!” and “Don’t worry sweetheart, you don’t need her!”. But quite honestly, it was the best motivation I had to bring a customer back. I was determined to prove that I could impress even her, and after a cold hard look at my work I got back to her with something better. Thanks to her I have this adorable tiger in my repertoire! (Trust me, you don’t want to see the first draft…)

Art comes from the heart, but selling it requires less emotions and more reality. There are very few people in the world who will give you the harsh truth that you need to pull yourself together, but in the end, they are the most valuable.  It’s no secret that us artists are a race of dreamers, and occasionally, we need the sane ones to shake us back into reality.

Holiday Madness!

Wait, what? It’s September!

If you’ve ever worked any aspect of retail, though, you know that holiday preparations better be underway NOW, or you’re going to be swamped, real fast. Like many others, I learned the hard way, getting bogged down by more orders than I could manage (not a bad problem to have). But as a student, that also meant neglecting final exam preparation and orchestra rehearsals just to get those orders out. Not a good plan, even though I managed it in the end. Now I’ve got the added task of fitting time in to do college applications as well… Wish me luck! This time, I’ll be prepared.

A little tip to shoppers, too: Make your holiday orders now and you’ll be glad! Stocked up inventory= less processing time= happy you! It can be so stressful when you’re frantically waiting for packages to arrive last minute…

In other holiday plans, I’ve had an eye on the Lynbrook High School Holiday Craft Fair for a while now, and it would be fantastic to make my first appearance at an actual craft show! It’ll fall perfectly in place with my goals to get out there and meet some clients face to face! If anyone local (south bay area) is interested, here’s a link. Deadline for applications is Nov 1st. Seems far out but it’s just around the corner!

The booth fee is pretty small and I’ve heard it’s a great atmosphere, plus we can help out some aspiring musicians! As a cellist, I totally think it’ll be worth it.

Anyways, the toughest thing is to just chill out sometimes because there’s so much you could be doing instead! Who’s got some tips and stories to share on how to manage all this madness?

Customer Love!

Here are a few words for you: Unique Customer Service. What does it mean?

For me, it’s meant multiple drafts for custom orders (pictures every step of the way!), cutting down 2 weeks of processing into a night for rush orders (no additional charge!), free gift wrapping (plus a loving handmade greeting card) and most recently, welcoming a customer to my home (at 11:30PM. On a weeknight.)

100% of the time, my motto is “No problem!”. You make the request, I make it happen. I think that these special requests make an otherwise bland business transaction into what makes handmade unique. If there’s one thing I want my customers to know, it’s that I’m a real person and I really, really, really love working with them. Trust me, if I was in it just for the money, I would have been long gone by now.

Back to this lovely gal I had the pleasure of doing business with! She reached out to me via etsy wanting to know what the absolute soonest I could get a scarf to her was. Now, the processing time is listed as 2 weeks (more of a cushion than anything, especially in busy months), but if people give a date they need it by, I don’t mind prioritizing their order to accommodate.

This one in particular was some serious business. With a first anniversary date only days away, she needed the gift to come quick, and unfortunately paying an additional $35 for same day delivery just wasn’t going to cut it, so I made the next best offer seeing as she was relatively local:

I was super excited to meet her! Quite coincidental since I had just made a post about my new goal to strive for personal connections! We arranged to meet around 9:00 PM when she planned to be in the area, but a bit of a delay coupled with crazy Bay Area traffic brought her to my door no earlier than 11:30 PM. Though the parental unit clamored for me to get to bed, I swear it was worth it!

Protip: If you ever find yourself inviting a stranger to your house in the dead of the night, ask them for a picture for your blog!

My shop opened in June of 2009 and it’s been a wild ride ever since. I’ve learned a ton and realized that I absolutely love, love, love the people I’ve gotten to work with as customers and mentors. Here’s to many more great years to come!

Throwback to Day One. It felt fantastic!

Let’s get personal. The hardest part of selling and buying online is the lack of face to face interaction. You don’t know me and I don’t know you. Let’s change that!
